Vancouver, Banff and Lake Louise aboard the ‘Rocky Mountaineer’

Explore the dynamic, artistic city of Vancouver and then ascend the lofty Canadian Rockies aboard the world-famous ‘Rocky Mountaineer’ train to Banff and Lake Louise.

Begin in Vancouver, gateway to the Pacific Northwest, for a choice of different ways to experience this progressive city by sea, by bicycle, by foot – or by cuisine!

Board the ‘Rocky Mountaineer’ and ascend the majestic Canadian Rockies, travelling through a variety of landscapes from towering mountains to mighty rivers, green valleys, rolling grasslands and the great conifer forests of the New World. Stroll beside the pale blue waters of Lake Louise and experience the awe-inspiring beauty of Banff National Park, including a gondola trip to the top of Sulphur Mountain and a helicopter ride above the Rocky Mountains.

Continue to Toronto, cultural capital of Canada, for the beginning of our Behind the Scenery theatre and music tour with Jonathan Biggins.

Depart Australia or New Zealand on suggested Air Canada flights arriving in Vancouver in the morning (same day). Renaissance Tours or your travel agent can assist you with your travel arrangements.

Make your way to the hotel and check in. The rest of the day is at leisure to explore Vancouver at your own pace.

Today enjoy a choice of four different optional activities: a six-hour tour of Vancouver’s north shore; a five-hour guided bicycling tour of the highlights of Vancouver; a food tour of Vancouver’s Granville Island; or a two-hour sea safari.

The afternoon is at leisure.

In the morning, check out of the hotel and board the ‘Rocky Mountaineer’ train bound for Kamloops.

Travel through a series of stunning landscapes, displaying the environmental diversity of the Pacific Northwest. Starting out from the lush coastal environment of Vancouver and surrounds, continue up through the verdant Fraser River Valley, a gentle land of oxbow lakes and agriculture. Follow the canyons that pass through the Coast and Cascade Mountains, and reach the rolling grasslands of the British Columbia Interior.

Arrive in Kamloops in the evening and check in to the hotel.

Board the Rocky Mountaineer again for the climb to the magnificent Canadian Rockies that form the border between British Columbia and Alberta. Travel through Craigellachie, where the last spike was driven in the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1885, making good on the promise that had brought British Columbia into the growing confederation. Crest Rogers Pass and travel through Kicking Horse Canyon and the Spiral Tunnels bored through solid rock that testify to the nation-building project of the railroad.

In the late afternoon, arrive at your hotel on the shores of the turquoise-coloured Lake Louise.

Enjoy a morning at leisure to explore Lake Louise. The 2 km-long lake plumbs depths down to 70 m and is formed from the meltwaters of the surrounding glaciers. The glaciers’ slow passage through the landscape scours the valleys and produces the distinctive colour of the lake as the pulverised ‘rock flour’ refracts the bright sunlight.

In the afternoon, take a half-day tour of Yoho National Park, including the Spiral Tunnels, Emerald Lake and the natural rock bridge over Kicking Horse River.

Transfer to Banff in the late afternoon and check in to the hotel.

Spend the day exploring the natural wonders of Banff National Park, whose 6,641 sq km abound with glaciers, ice fields and mighty conifer forests which first set seed 80 million years ago. Travel to Bow Falls, featured in 1954’s River of No Return with Robert Mitchum and Marilyn Monroe, and onwards to Lake Minnewanka, at 21 km the longest lake in the Canadian Rockies. Stop at Surprise Corner for an iconic photo opportunity overlooking the neo-Gothic Banff Springs Hotel nestled within the national park, take the gondola up to the summit of Sulphur Mountain, and visit the limestone spires known as the ‘Hoodoos’.

In the afternoon, enjoy a thrilling 12-minute helicopter flight over the majestic scenery of the Canadian Rockies and the Bow River.

In the late afternoon, transfer to Calgary and check in to the hotel.

Check out from the hotel after breakfast and transfer to Calgary Airport for a late morning flight to Toronto (included in pre-tour price) to join our Behind the Scenery tour.
