La Scala Ballet in Brisbane

From Milan’s Teatro alla Scala, the La Scala Ballet Company performs exclusively in Brisbane in its debut visit to Australia, presented by Queensland Performing Arts Centre.

Begin your weekend of dance with a performance of Bespoke, a new contemporary dance production by leading artists of the Queensland Ballet. Then, enjoy two performances at Queensland Performing Arts Centre by the La Scala Ballet, one of the oldest ballet companies in the world, that has been shaped and influenced by renowned 20th century choreographers such as Mikhail Fokin, Léonide Massine and Rudolf Nureyev.

La Scala Ballet’s signature production is the lavish and sensual Don Quixote with its original choreography by Nureyev, while the magical and ethereal Giselle features La Scala’s international cast of principal and guest dancers.

Arrive in Brisbane and make your way to the hotel on Brisbane’s Southbank. In the early evening, join Donna and fellow travellers for a special welcome dinner.

Then, depart by coach for the Brisbane Powerhouse Theatre, located on the west bank of Brisbane River. Enjoy the contemporary dance production Bespoke, choreographed by internationally-acclaimed choreographer Gabrielle Nankivell and Queensland Ballet dancer Jack Lister, and performed by Queensland Ballet artists alongside guest dancers from the Expressions Dance Company.

Start this morning with a pre-performance talk by Donna on the upcoming La Scala Ballet performances. Then, enjoy a day at leisure in Brisbane.

In the evening, depart for the Queensland Performing Arts Centre, conveniently located within walking distance of the hotel. Tonight’s performance of Don Quixote, one of the signature productions of the La Scala Ballet, features Nureyev’s chorography complete with Spanish fandangos, virtuosic performances and the famous final grand pas de deux.

After a morning at leisure, walk to the Queensland Performing Arts Centre for a matinee performance of Giselle. The Romantic tale of heart-break, sacrifice and eternal love unfolds on stage against the backdrop of the spectral white tutus of the corps de ballet, with the company performing the original Coralli-Perrot choreography.

This evening, join Donna and fellow travellers for a special farewell dinner at a local restaurant.

Established in 1778 with the inauguration of Milan’s theatre, the La Scala Ballet Company flourished under the development and influence of illustrious choreographers of the late 18th and early 19th century. Links with Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, George Balanchine and Rudolf Nureyev were created over the 20th century, with dancers Roland Petit and Maurice Béjart making their debut with the company. Today’s principal dancers include Nicoletta Manni and Claudio Coviello. In recent years, La Scala Ballet has begun touring abroad with debut performances in Paris, Moscow, Germany and China amongst others, with Brisbane being its debut and only city to visit in Australia. The La Scala ballet performances are presented by Queensland Performing Arts Centre.
