Wines of Burgundy

Designed as a post-tour to Art, Music and Wine in the South of France

This tour is part of the World Art Tours program organised by the Art Gallery Society of NSW in partnership with Renaissance Tours.

In the morning, transfer by coach from Lyon to Beaune. Enjoy some time at leisure to visit the famous Beaune markets, before arriving at the hotel in the afternoon for check-in.

Following a talk by Peter, visit the Domaine Bouchard located in the Château de Beaune, a former royal fortress built in the 15th century by King Louis XI. The cellars run deep underground beneath the property providing ideal natural storage conditions for Bouchard Père & Fils’ fine wines, including a unique collection of over 2,000 bottles from the 19th century. The icon of the collection is a Meursault Charmes 1846, which still retains its lustre.

Enjoy a walking tour of the old city of Beaune. Within the city’s ramparts, along cobble-stoned streets, pass historical mansions, Mediaeval half-timbered houses, flowered squares and elegant gardens. See the Collegiale Notre Dame Basilica, a fine example of Burgundian Romanesque architecture.

After lunch at a local restaurant, visit the magnificent Gothic Hôtel-Dieu. Also known as the Beaune Hospices, the polychrome tile-roofed Hôtel-Dieu was constructed in the mid-15th century by the Chancellor of the Duchy of Burgundy as a hospital for the poor. The remainder of the afternoon is at leisure to continue your exploration of Beaune at your own pace.

Continue to the Maison Champy, discover this first established wine house of Burgundy founded in 1720 and enjoy a special wine tasting to appreciate the particular characteristics of the region’s fine wine.

(BL)

This morning, travel north of Beaune to the village of Nuits St Georges and visit Domaine Faiveley. Spanning 120 hectares of vineyards, the domain is one of the largest family wineries in Burgundy. For seven generations, the family has maintained the excellence of their Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise wines.

After lunch at a local restaurant, continue to the Clos de Vougeot and visit this iconic winery and Renaissance-style château dating back to the 12th century.

(BL)

Drive south along the Route des Grands Crus to the Côte de Beaune region and visit Olivier Leflaive winery overlooking the centre of Puligny-Montrachet and enjoy a wine tasting to appreciate the richness and diversity of their wines.

Celebrate the conclusion of the tour with a special farewell lunch with Peter and fellow travellers at the renowned Hotel Montrachet.

Continue to the historic Château de Meursault, one of the most fabulous cellars of Côte de Beaune. Explore the magnificent cellars built in the 12th century, in a typical Burgundy architectural style.

Return to Beaune in the late afternoon, followed by an evening at leisure.
