Treasures of Transylvania #2

Check out of the hotel this morning and meet your local guide, then depart Bucharest for Brasov with lunch en route. Arrive at the hotel in Brasov in the mid-afternoon.

This evening, enjoy a performance by musicians of the Brasov Philharmonic in the Valea Cetatii Cave, a cavern known for its incredible natural acoustics (performance subject to confirmation).

Enjoy a morning walking tour of Brasov’s Old Town including the fortification walls, the Old Town Hall Square with its colourful Baroque-style buildings and the imposing Black Church, Romania’s largest Gothic church.

In the afternoon, drive to Sinaia Mountain Resort for a visit to the imposing neo-Renaissance Peles Castle, built by King Carol I as the summer residence of the royal family. Finish with a visit to The George Enescu Memorial House, the former summer residence of the composer. Return to Brasov in the early evening. Dinner is at a local restaurant.

Depart Brasov for a full-day tour to Sighisoara. On the way, stop in the village of Viscri with its fortified church and the restored UNESCO World Heritage-listed Transylvanian Saxon home, now owned by the UK’s Prince Charles.

Arrive in Sighisoara in the early afternoon for lunch and a walking tour of the citadel, known as the upper town. Founded by German craftsmen and merchants, Sighisoara is a fine example of a small, fortified Mediaeval town. Return to Brasov in the early evening.

Enjoy a morning at leisure to further explore Brasov on your own.

In the afternoon, journey out of Brasov to Bran Castle, better known as ‘Dracula’s Castle’. Although Bram Stoker, author of Dracula, never visited Romania, his description of the vampire’s castle identifies closest with the location of this castle, perched on the edge of a precipice overlooking the Transylvanian valley below. Return to Brasov in the late afternoon.

This morning, check out of the hotel and depart for Sibiu, driving along the ridge of the

Fagaras Mountains. Stop in Fagaras for lunch and a view of the impressive 14th century citadel used by Romanian, Austrian and Hungarian princes as a defence against the Ottomans.

Continue on to the Astra Museum of Traditional Folk Civilisation, an open-air ethnographic museum displaying an array of traditional dwellings, mills and churches brought from around the country. Arrive in Sibiu, a well-preserved Transylvanian citadel, in the early evening.

Begin today with a walking tour of Sibiu’s Old Town, a Mediaeval centre featuring the ‘large’, and ‘small’ public squares, Council Tower and Liars Bridge. The remainder of the afternoon is at leisure.

In the evening, enjoy a private organ concert in the Lutheran Cathedral of Saint Mary, a 14th century Gothic church with a 17th century organ which is the largest in south-eastern Europe (performance subject to confirmation).

After breakfast, check out of the hotel for the journey back to Bucharest. En route, visit the 14th century Cozia Monastery and enjoy a farewell lunch at a local restaurant.

Arrive in Bucharest in the evening for check-in to the hotel.

In the morning, transfer to Bucharest airport (transfer included in tour price) for suggested Qatar Airways flights to Australia and New Zealand via Doha.
