Depart Lisbon for a full day tour to nearby Sintra, for centuries the summer residence of the Portuguese royal family. Located at an altitude of 500m, yet only 20 km from the Atlantic Ocean, Sintra enjoys a distinctly temperate ‘hill-town’ climate and ambience. In addition to its royal residents, Sintra has attracted the aristocracy and the wealthy from Portugal and abroad who in the 19th century built grand mansions, villas and gardens. Visit Montserrate and the Park and Palace of Pena.
NB. Considerable walking and stairs at Montserrate and Pena.
Check out of your hotel and depart for a morning tour to Belém, on the mouth of the Tagus River, six kilometres west of the city centre. Belém is recognised for its concentration of national monuments and public spaces, including a mixture of historical buildings and modern symbols of Portuguese culture.
Visit the Torre de Belém (1515-21), see the Monument to the Explorers, the Mosteiro dos Jeronimos and the National Coach Museum which has one of the finest collections of historical carriages in the world.
Tour arrangements conclude after a late lunch.
