Sydney Opera, Music and Art Weekend
Experience the unique spectacle of opera on Sydney Harbour, enjoy a concert by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in the Concert Hall of Sydney Opera House, hear Australian soprano Nicole Car perform with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, and explore the Sydney Biennale at three locations across Sydney.
In 2018, Opera Australia will put on a production like no other with a glorious staging of Puccini’s timeless love story La bohème, the 2018 iteration of the phenomenally successful annual Handa Opera on the Harbour.
Continue your enjoyment of Sydney Harbour with a ferry ride to Cockatoo Island for the Sydney Biennale, the nation’s foremost celebration of contemporary art, under the artistic direction of Mami Kataoka. Also visit the White Rabbit Gallery and two other venues of the Biennale – the Museum of Contemporary Art and Art Gallery of New South Wales (Biennale details to be announced late 2017).
Be treated to a concert by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra at the Opera House, then cap off your weekend in the ‘Harbour City’ with a performance by soprano Nicole Car and the Australian Chamber Orchestra at the City Recital Hall.
Arrive in Sydney and check in to the hotel. Tour arrangements commence at the hotel at 15.30 with a welcome briefing and pre-performance talk by Damien Beaumont.
Enjoy dinner by the harbour at a local restaurant before this evening’s spectacular performance of Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour: Puccini’s La Bohème, conducted by Brian Castles-Onion in a much-anticipated new production by director Andy Morton. Return transfer to the hotel after the performance.
This morning, board a privately chartered ferry to Cockatoo Island for a visit to the Sydney Biennale, a fascinating exhibition of contemporary art from prominent Australian and international artists. After time for exploration and lunch on your own, return to Circular Quay to visit another location of the Biennale at the Museum of Contemporary Art overlooking Sydney Harbour. After a guided tour of the MCA, the remainder of the afternoon is at leisure.
This evening, attend a performance in the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Masaaki Suzuki. The programme includes Haydn’s Symphony No. 95 and Beethoven’s Mass in C.
This morning travel to Chippendale to visit the White Rabbit Gallery for a guided tour of this fascinating art museum which exhibits selections from the White Rabbit Collection of 21st century Chinese contemporary art. Continue to the third location of the Sydney Biennale – the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Enjoy a guided tour of some of the museum’s exhibitions that will be displayed as part of the Biennale festival. Afterwards, take on a leisurely stroll through the beautiful Botanic Gardens, followed by some free time.
In the late afternoon, join Damien and fellow travellers for a special farewell dinner, followed by Richard Tognetti conducting the Australian Chamber Orchestra at the City Recital Hall. Renowned Australian soprano Nicole Car returns home to join the ACO for her only orchestral performance in Australia this year, singing works by Mozart, Beethoven and Verdi.
