Tristan und Isolde in Perth

Under the baton of Asher Fisch, the West Australian Symphony Orchestra continues its presentation of Wagner’s masterpieces with the dramatic, philosophical and profoundly influential opera, Tristan und Isolde. Australian Stuart Skelton, the finest Tristan of our time, and internationally celebrated Dutch soprano Eva-Marie Westbroek claim the stage as the tragic young lovers.

The 1865 opera arguably set the tone for all Western music in the ensuing decades, and while some composers sought to imitate it and some reacted against it, none could ignore it. Attend a special talk to deepen your understanding of this great dramatic opera.

Enjoy a day trip past the forests abutting Perth to the charming town of York, Western Australia’s oldest inland settlement. Dating back to the Western Australian Gold Rush in the 1890s, York is one of the State’s historic gems with fine examples of civic and commercial architecture.

This morning, depart for York for an exploration of the first inland settlement of Western Australia. Established in 1831, the heritage town, situated on the banks of the Avon River amidst farmland and natural scenery, presents beautifully preserved examples of colonial architecture with its precinct of Victorian and Federation style buildings. Wander along sections of the Heritage Trail to see the Town Hall, Old Hospital, Court House and the Church of St. Patrick, with the latter built in the domineering Gothic revival style.

On your return to Perth visit Kings Park for spectacular displays of Western Australia’s unique flora and breathtaking views across the CBD and Swan River. The evening is at leisure.

With a tour de force performance, Sunday 19th of August marks the end of West Australian Symphony Orchestra conductor Asher Fisch’s ambitious two-year Wagner journey. Starting with Wagner and Beyond in 2017, with a focus on works from the 1830s and 40s that Richard Wagner himself would have heard, as well as late Romantic works heavily influenced by the Wagnerian style from composers such as Mahler and Strauss, WASO’s 2018 Tristan und Isolde has been a highlighted premiere event since its initial announcement. Reuniting Australian Stuart Skelton and Dutch Eva-Maria Westbroek to reprise the roles they sung at the 2016 Baden Baden Festival with the Berlin Philharmonic under Sir Simon Rattle, the concert also brings together the WASO Chorus and St. George’s Cathedral Consort with the Orchestra for Wagner’s rousing and heady chorales. Undeniably radical, innovative and influential, Wagner’s music in Tristan und Isolde pushed the boundary of conventional harmony, tonality and orchestration, shaping the Western musical landscape for the 19th and 20th century.
