Verdi’s Requiem and Wagner’s Parsifal
Treat yourself to a star-studded weekend of opera and music at the Sydney Opera House! Experience the sweeping majesty, vocal power and emotional depth of these two great masterpieces by Giuseppe Verdi and Richard Wagner, two of the 19th century’s greatest composers.
To realise these two concert performances in the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House, Opera Australia has brought together a stunning international line-up of artists including Milijana Nikolic, Diego Torre and Roberto Scandiuzzi (Requiem) and Jonas Kaufmann, Michelle DeYoung, Michael Honeyman, Warwick Fyfe and Kwangchul Youn (Parsifal) with the Opera Australian Chorus and Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra conducted respectively by Renato Palumbo and Pinchas Steinberg.
Arrive in Sydney and check-in to the Four Seasons Sydney Hotel. Tour arrangements begin at 4.30 pm with a welcome briefing and pre-concert dinner, followed by a performance of Verdi’s Requiem in the Concert hall of the Sydney Opera House (7.30 pm). Alternatively expressing sorrow, desire, anger and fear – Verdi’s Requiem is a thrilling journey of intense human emotion, as dramatic as any opera.
The performance stars the Opera Australia Chorus and Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra conducted by Renato Palumbo with an international cast of Verdi specialists including Milijana Nikolic (mezzo-soprano), Diego Torre (tenor) and Roberto Scandiuzzi (bass).
Today, journey north of the Harbour for a full day tour to three historically important places on Sydney’s North Shore, each resonating in its own way with the settings for the three Acts of Wagner’s Parsifal.
Begin with a visit to ‘Eryldene’ in Gordon, designed by visionary architect William Hardy Wilson for Prof. E. G. Waterhouse who created its internationally acclaimed camellia garden – a setting evocative of Klingsor’s magic garden.
Continue to St Patrick’s Estate in Manly, a complex of grand Victorian buildings in the Gothic style built in 1889 as the first National Catholic Seminary in Australia. Today the site is occupied by the International College of Management, whose hospitality students will prepare and serve a special lunch in the Dining Hall.
In the afternoon, experience the tranquillity and beauty of the Sydney Harbour National Park, North Head, with its panoramic views of Sydney Harbour. Within the National park, tour the former Quarantine Station, renowned for its important place in Australian history.
After breakfast, join Peter for an introduction to Wagner’s Parsifal, followed by a morning at leisure.
This afternoon, attend a matinee performance (2.00 pm) of Wagner’s Parsifal in the Concert Hall of the Opera House. Conducted by Pinchas Steinberg, the performance will star Jonas Kaufmann (Parsifal), Michelle DeYoung (Kundry), Michael Honeyman (Amfortas), Warwick Fyfe (Klingsor), Kwangchul Youn (Gurnemanz) and David Parkin (Titurel) with the Opera Australia Chorus and Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra.
Following the performance enjoy a special farewell dinner.
Tour arrangements conclude after breakfast; departures from Sydney.
