Saturday 17 September 2022 / Depart Australia/New Zealand

Depart Australia or New Zealand on suggested Qantas/Emirates flights to Basel via Dubai and London. Renaissance Tours or your travel agent can assist you with your flights, pre-tour accommodation, travel insurance (a condition of travel) and other arrangements.

Sun 18 Sep 2022 / Basel

Arrive in Basel and make your way to the hotel. At 14:00, join Gitte and fellow travellers for a welcome briefing in the hotel.

This afternoon, explore the Tinguely Museum, housing the greatest collection of works spanning four decades by Jean Tinguely, one of the most innovative and important Swiss artists of the twentieth century known for his kinetic sculptures.

Return to the hotel in the late afternoon before dinner in a local restaurant.

Mon 19 Sep / Basel

Today, enjoy a tour of the city, including the large market square with its richly decorated red sandstone town hall and the Late Romanesque-Gothic cathedral.

After lunch, visit the Fondation Beyeler, housed in a superb purpose-built museum designed by Renzo Piano. The foundation houses the vast collection of successful art dealers Hildy and Ernst Beyeler, one of the founders of the Art Basel art fair.

Tue 20 Sep / Basel – Zurich

This morning, check out of the hotel and transfer to the Basel Kunstmuseum. Reopened in 2016 after extensive renovations and the addition of a new wing, the museum displays the largest and most significant public art collection in Switzerland, including works from the early fifteenth century to the present.

Then, depart Basel and head to Zurich. Upon arrival in Zurich enjoy lunch in a traditional Swiss restaurant before a walk through the old town. Explore the thirteenth-century Fraumünster church, renowned for its series of stunning stained-glass windows designed by Marc Chagall and Augusto Giacometti, father of sculptor Alberto.

Continue to the hotel and check in. The evening is at leisure.

Wed 21 Sep / Zurich

After a talk by Gitte, visit the Kunsthaus, Zurich’s renowned Museum for Modern Art. It houses a large collection of modern art and works by Alberto Giacometti, Picasso, Monet and Chagall as well as numerous contemporary Swiss artists.

After lunch at the Kunsthaus restaurant, travel out of Zurich to nearby Winterthur. Visit the Stadtgarten Museum, which houses Oskar Reinhart’s outstanding collection of German, Austrian and Swiss art.

Tonight, celebrate the conclusion of the tour with a farewell dinner with Gitte and fellow travellers.

For those tour members continuing on the European Art and Music Cruise, make your way to Zurich airport for onward travel to Frankfurt, where tour arrangements begin.

        Participation in tours

        Most of our tours require a MODERATE level of fitness. However, in certain destinations, or in certain seasons, or because of the nature of travel, certain tours will require an ABOVE MODERATE or CHALLENGING level of fitness. For the overall benefit of the group, at the time of booking we will require you to declare in writing that you are fit to participate in your chosen tour according to the level of fitness required for that tour. If you (or we) have any doubts about your level of fitness, you may be required to undergo a doctor’s appraisal. This would require your doctor to read the itinerary of your chosen tour, including the fitness level, and provide you (and us) with a written confirmation of your ability to participate.
        We reserve the right to refuse admission to the tour for any reason before commencement of the tour. Further, if after the tour has begun it becomes apparent that you are unfit or unsuitable to travel on the tour, we reserve the right to require you to withdraw from the tour at the earliest opportunity to do so. No refund will be provided.
        It is also a requirement that you do not cause any significant disruption to the tour or the tour group, and we may refuse admission on the tour, or require you to withdraw from the tour at any time if your participation causes significant disruption for other guests or the tour group or there is any safety issue as a result of your ongoing participation in the tour.

        Fitness to participate

        Moderate

        Tour members must be able to:

        • negotiate airports and railway stations without wheelchair assistance
        • use combined shower/bath facilities (it is impossible to guarantee walk-in shower facilities)
        • undertake walking tours of 1-2 hours duration, including using stairs, walking over cobblestones and other uneven surfaces
        • stand for long periods in museums and other sites
        • embark / disembark coaches, trains and other methods of transportation without assistance
        • handle your own luggage

        Above Moderate

        In addition to the above, tour members must also be able to:

        • undertake walking tours of 2-3 hours
        • climb staircases of 100 or more steps

        Challenging*

        In addition to the above, tour members must also be able to:

        • handle extremes of temperature (e.g. below 0 or above 35 degrees)
        • handle extremes of altitudes (e.g. 4000 metres and above)
