Music, Ballet and Art in Melbourne
Thrill to extraordinary performances of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra with virtuosos Lang Lang and Vadim Gluzman, along with the Monte Carlo Ballet, bringing fiery life to the Melbourne winter in 2019.
Enjoy a series of concerts by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, featuring piano virtuoso Lang Lang performing Mozart’s sublime Piano Concerto no.24 and Vadim Gluzman performing Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto.
Then, be captivated by the visiting Monte Carlo Ballet with a performance of LAC, an adaptation of Tchaikovsky’s classic Swan Lake by choreographer Jean-Christophe Maillot.
In between performances, enjoy Melbourne’s rich collection of art galleries including a guided tour of the annual Melbourne Winter Masterpieces exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria and a visit to the unique Johnston Collection of fine and decorative art.

In the evening, join Andy and fellow travellers for a welcome briefing, pre-performance talk and dinner at The Arts Centre Melbourne. After dinner attend a performance of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra playing Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto featuring Ukrainian-born violinist Vadim Gluzman.
Start the day with a guided tour of the Melbourne Winter Masterpieces exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria.
After lunch, enjoy a curator-led tour of the intriguing Grainger Museum, which celebrates the life of Australian composer Percy Grainger and houses original manuscripts, published scores, musical instruments, field recordings, artworks, photographs, books and personal items.
Then, transfer to the Conservatorium to view a portrait of iconic Australian opera singer Dame Nellie Melba, one of the most famous singers of the late Victorian Era and the first Australian to receive international recognition as a classical musician.
The evening is at leisure.
This morning travel to Altona for a private guided tour of The Australian Ballet’s Production Centre, a purpose-built facility used to house the ballet company’s props, sets and costumes.
After lunch, return to the hotel for an afternoon at leisure.
This evening, walk to The Arts Centre for a performance by the Monte Carlo Ballet of the sensual cousin of the world’s most famous ballet, Swan Lake. The work is choreographed by Jean-Christophe Maillot, who is famous for his ability to combine the contemporary with the fine classical ballet style.
Begin the day with a pre-performance talk by Andy, followed by a private tour of the Johnston Collection, comprising objects of fine and decorative art collected by antiques dealer William Robert Johnston and housed in the Fairhall historic house.
Then join Andy for a special farewell lunch at a local restaurant followed by free time in the afternoon.
Tonight, conclude the tour with a performance by piano virtuoso Lang Lang as he performs Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.24 with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
