Musica d’Italia

Over two glorious weeks, luxuriate in la dolce vita at two of Italy’s most prestigious summer music festivals – the Ravenna Festival and the Trasimeno Music Festival.

Established by world-renowned pianist Angela Hewitt in 2005, the Trasimeno Music Festival brings together international artists in the natural beauty and history of the hill town of Perugia. In settings such as the Castle of the Knights of Malta, the Benedictine Abbey of St Peter and the Basilica of St Francis of Assisi, the 2018 Festival program included the complete works of Bach’s The Well-Tempered Clavier along with works by Scarlatti, Mozart, Schubert and Ravel.

In Italy’s gastronomic heartland of Emilia-Romagna, the Ravenna Festival presents chamber music, orchestral works and opera in venues throughout the city’s exquisite Byzantine churches, piazzas and cloisters.

In the picturesque cities of Perugia and Ravenna, enjoy regional food, fine wine and leisurely sightseeing through the heart of Italy.

Depart Australia or New Zealand in the evening on suggested Emirates flights to Bologna via Dubai. Renaissance Tours or your travel agent can assist you with your flights and other travel arrangements.

Arrive at Bologna Airport in the afternoon on suggested flights and transfer to Ravenna (transfer included in tour price). For those tour members arriving in Bologna earlier than today, there will be a collection in central Bologna before proceeding to the airport.

Check in to the hotel in Ravenna in the late afternoon. This evening join Mary Jo and fellow travellers for a special welcome dinner.

Attend performances in the Ravenna Festival (program to be announced early 2019), enlivened by pre-performance talks by Mary Jo.

In between performances, explore some of the historic, artistic and gastronomic highlights of Ravenna. See the Basilica of San Vitale, where glittering golden mosaics depicting 6th century Emperor Justinian I and his wife Empress Theodora bear witness to the power and sophistication of the Byzantine Empire. Also sample some of the delectable meats and cheeses which have earnt the Region of Emilia-Romagna the sobriquet ‘il cuor e la pancia d’Italia’ – ‘the heart and tummy of Italy’!

The Ravenna Festival
Inaugurated in 1990, the Ravenna Festival was established by impressaria Maria Cristina Mazzavillani, herself a native of Ravenna, in collaboration with her husband, celebrated conductor Ricardo Muti. The Festival showcases some of the world’s finest opera and classical music in the languid ease of early summertime, attracting conductors such as Zubin Mehta, George Solti, Pierre Boulet and Valery Gergiev – and of course Muti himself. While the 2019 program will not be announced until early next year, the 2018 Festival featured the likes of the Mariinsky Orchestra, the La Scala Theatre Quartet and the Cherubini Orchestra performing works by Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt, Antonin Dvořák, Leonard Bernstein, George Gershwin, Cole Porter and Arvo Pärt.

Check out of the hotel in the morning and travel south to Perugia.

Enjoy lunch in Perugia and check in to the hotel in the afternoon.

Attend performances in the Trasimeno Festival (program to be announced late 2018), and enjoy a series of pre-performance talks by Mary Jo.

Also explore the city and surrounds of Perugia, capital of Umbria. Admire works by Raffaello in Perugia, and visit the vast Basilica of St Francis of Assisi, a stupendous white hilltop edifice which is the mother church of the Conventual Franciscan Friars. See the evocative Roman ruins in the town of Gubbio, the picturesque hilltown of San Savino and the Church of St Michael the Archangel which crowns the island of Isola Maggiore in Lake Trasimeno itself.

The Trasimeno Festival
Founded by pianist Angela Hewitt in 2005 – after she had just completed her 11-year project of recording all the major keyboard works of J.S. Bach – the Trasimeno Festival has already established itself as one of the musical highlights of the European summer. Hewitt herself remains one of the stars of the Festival, regularly performing both solo and with other visiting artists. The 2019 Festival program will be released later this year, but the 2018 Festival attracted performers including the Camerata Salzburg, the Royal String Quartet, pianist Gabriela Montero, flautist Andrea Oliva and soprano Ilona Domnich performing works by J.S. Bach, W.A. Mozart, Domenico Scarlatti, Richard Wagner, Maurice Ravel, Edward Elgar and Philip Glass.

Enjoy a special farewell lunch with Mary Jo and fellow travellers, before a final performance in the Trasimeno Festival.
