Treasures of Transylvania
Designed as an optional post-tour to Romanian Rhapsody (11–23 September 2019).
Check out of the hotel in Bucharest in the morning and travel to the village of Ramnicu Valcea for lunch, followed by a visit to the 14th century Cozia Monastery.
Continue to Sibiu and check in to the hotel in the early evening. Dinner tonight is at the hotel.
Begin the day with a walking tour of Sibiu’s Old Town, a Mediaeval centre featuring the ‘large’, and ‘small’ public squares, Council Tower and Liars’ Bridge.
Lunch and the afternoon are at leisure to continue your exploration of Sibiu. This evening, enjoy a special private organ concert at the Lutheran Cathedral. The 14th century Gothic cathedral is one of the landmarks of the town, and its massive organ, built by a Slovakian craftsman in 1671, is the largest in south-eastern Europe.
This morning, travel to the town of Fagaras for a visit to its impressive 14th century fortress, used by Romanian, Austrian and Hungarian princes as a defence against the Ottomans. Continue to the Romanian Orthodox Monastery of Sambata de Sus for a special lunch with the monks, resplendent in their dignified black robes and black (or white!) beards, followed by an exploration of the monastery itself.
Return to Sibiu in the late afternoon.
In the morning, visit the Astra Museum of Traditional Folk Civilisation, an open-air ethnographic museum displaying an array of traditional dwellings, mills and churches brought from around the country. Then travel to the village of Sibiel for lunch in a traditional Transylvanian house followed by a visit to the Museum of Icons on Glass. A uniquely Romanian fusion of Orthodox icon-making tradition and Western Christian glass-painting technique, the museum is a comprehensive collection of this exquisite 18th century art form.
Return to Sibiu in the afternoon, followed by an evening at leisure.
In the morning, check out of the hotel and travel to Sighisoara for a walking tour of the citadel, known as the Upper Town. Founded by German craftsmen and merchants, Sighisoara is a fine example of a small, fortified Mediaeval town.
After lunch in Sighisoara and some free time, continue to the village of Viscri, visiting its fortified church and the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Transylvanian Saxon House, a restored Mediaeval home now owned by the UK’s Prince Charles.
Arrive in Brasov in the evening and check in to the hotel, followed by dinner.
Enjoy a morning walking tour of Brasov’s Old Town, including the fortification walls, the Old Town Hall Square with its colourful Baroque buildings and the imposing Black Church, Romania’s largest Gothic church.
Then journey out of Brasov to the village of Bran. After lunch, visit Bran Castle, better known as ‘Dracula’s Castle’. Although Bram Stoker, author of Dracula, never visited Romania, his description of the vampire’s castle identifies most closely with the location of this castle, perched on the edge of a precipice overlooking the Transylvanian valley below.
After some free time to explore Bran at your own pace, return to Brasov in the late afternoon.
Check out of the hotel in in the morning and travel to the mountain town of Sinaia for a visit to the imposing Neo-Renaissance Peles Castle, built by King Carol I of Romania as the summer residence of the royal family. After a special farewell lunch in Peles, visit the George Enescu Memorial House, the former summer residence of the composer.
In the late afternoon, arrive in Bucharest and check in to the hotel.
In the morning, transfer to Bucharest Airport (transfer included in tour price) for suggested Qatar Airways flights to Australia and New Zealand via Doha.
Tour arrangements conclude on arrival at the airport. Renaissance Tours or your travel agent can assist you with your flights and other travel arrangements, including any additional nights’ accommodation, either before or after the tour.
