Stemme and Lundgren in Hobart

Delight in a tour de force concert by acclaimed Swedish soprano Nina Stemme and compatriot bass-baritone John Lundgren, performing Wagner’s masterpieces with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and musicians from the Australian National Academy of Music in Hobart.

Following her award-winning performance here in 2016, Stemme returns to Hobart to present another one night only performance of Wagner operatic works with John Lundgren, himself acclaimed for this Wagner interpretations. Together they will perform with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Chief Conductor and Artistic Director Marko Letonja, who also conducted the 2016 concert. Stemme and Lundgren will perform some of the most recognised extracts from Die Walküre, Götterdämmerung and Der fliegende Holländer.

Also, enjoy an exclusive specially curated private concert at the historic Epsom House, and a pleasant cruise through the stunning D’Entrecasteux Channel to the pristine waters of Peppermint Bay.

In the late afternoon, travel to Epsom House in Pontville, one of the oldest houses in Australia. After a brief tour by the owners Jacqui and Geoffrey Robertson of their lovely restored home, enjoy dinner in the intimate courtyard.

After dinner, enjoy an exclusive private concert featuring the Australian pianist and composer Stefan Cassomenos, who will perform a program of solo piano works, including Beethoven’s melodic Symphony No. 6 in F Major (the Pastoral), Liszt’s arrangement of the powerful Liebestod from Wagner’s opera Tristan und Isolde, and Charles-Valentin Alkan’s Symphony for Solo Piano.

Return to Hobart in the late evening.


After breakfast, enjoy some free time early this morning to explore the iconic Salamanca Market. This weekly outdoor market takes place every Saturday and gathers over 300 stallholders from all over Tasmania including creative artisans and talented musicians.

Then, embark on a pleasant cruise to Peppermint Bay. Cruise past picturesque Bruny Island and through the stunning D’Entrecasteux Channel, and arrive in the pristine waters of Peppermint Bay. After lunch on board, return to Hobart for the reminder of the afternoon at leisure.

Following a pre-concert talk, attend the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra’s performance of selections from the operatic works of Wagner at Federation Concert Hall. Following her award-winning performance in 2016, the acclaimed Swedish soprano Nina Stemme returns to Hobart with compatriot bass-baritone John Lundgren, himself a famed Wagnerian.

Under the baton of Chief Conductor and Artistic Director Marko Letonja (who conducted the 2016 concert), Stemme and Lundgren will perform pieces from Der Ring des Nibelungen, including Wotan’s Farewell in Die Walküre and Brünnhilde’s Immolation Scene in Götterdämmerung, along with highlights from Der fliegende Holländer.

Conclude with an exclusive post-performance supper with the TSO and soloists (subject to final confirmation).
