Follow in the footsteps of British aristocrats discovering the splendours of the continent in Europe’s Grand Tour tradition, on this four-day musical journey at Tasmania’s historic Epsom House.

Crafted exclusively for Renaissance Tours patrons, revel in five carefully curated performances over a weekend that evokes the countries most frequented on these voyages, with selections of music from France, Italy, Germany, Russia and the Czech lands. Admire performances by some of Australia’s most celebrated musicians, with concerts presented by the Seraphim Trio, soprano Lorina Gore and versatile chamber musician Kristian Winther.

The experience is rounded out by the expertise of festival host and music specialist Robert Gibson, who introduces each performance, and by a gourmet menu of food and wine carefully chosen to complement the festival’s theme.

Friday 07 October 2022 / Arrive Hobart

Arrive in Hobart on suggested Qantas flights and make your way to the hotel.

At 5:00pm meet festival host Robert Gibson and fellow tour members at the hotel and depart for Epsom House on the outskirts of Hobart. Upon arrival, enjoy canapés and a welcome glass of sparkling wine with owners Jacqui and Geoff before an introduction to the weekend’s performances by Robert.

Then, be transported to France by the first concert of the festival, with a performance by soprano Lorina Gore, acclaimed violin soloist Kristian Winther, and the Seraphim Trio.

This morning, enjoy time at leisure to explore Hobart as the city brims with life at the start of the weekend. Take a walk through the iconic Salamanaca markets or travel by ferry along the Derwent River for a morning at Mona, the state’s celebrated contemporary art gallery.

Alternatively, join our organised private tour to explore the state rooms of Government House, Tasmania. Today regarded as one of the finest vice-regal residences in the Commonwealth, the scale, detail and finish of its architecture and décor are well-preserved and the building sits in a beautifully maintained garden of 15 hectares.

This afternoon, return to Epsom House to attend two further concerts. Beginning in Russia and then travelling to Germany, delight in music performed by the Seraphim Trio, soprano Lorina Gore and violinist Kristian Winther. A gourmet plated dinner will be served between the concerts.

In the mid-morning, return to Epsom House for coffee and cake before a performance of chamber music from the Czech lands by Lorina Gore, Kristian Winther and the Seraphim Trio.

CONCERT IV – PROGRAM:

Dvořák – String Quartet No. 12 American
Smetana – Piano Trio in G Minor, Op. 15

Afterwards, take macaroons and other refreshments in the lovely courtyard of Epsom House before returning to the ballroom for the final concert, a rousing program of music from Italy’s grandest composers.

Boccherini – String trio Op. 14 No. 2
Puccini – String quartet Crisantemi
Verdi/Liszt – Rigoletto for solo piano
Mascagni – Ave Maria, performed with string quartet
Arditi – Il bacio, performed with string quartet

Puccini – O mio babbino caro, from Gianni Schicchi
Puccini – Quando m’en vo, from La Bohème

After this final performance enjoy lunch, followed by an opportunity to meet the musicians over wine and cheese. Return to the hotel for some time at leisure, before joining Robert and fellow travellers for a light farewell reception at the hotel’s restaurant.

Seraphim Trio
The Seraphim Trio is one of Australia’s pre-eminent piano trios. Over the last two
decades, the members of the Seraphim Trio – Helen Ayres (violin), Anna Goldsworthy (piano) and Timothy Nankervis (cello) – have remained steadfastly committed to chamber music. The trio has regularly performed at the Melbourne International Arts Festival, the Port Fairy Spring Music Festival and the Adelaide Festival of Arts. The Seraphim Trio regularly collaborates with Australia’s leading musicians including Diana Doherty, Paul Dean, Lisa Harper-Brown and David Elton.

Lorina Gore
Acclaimed Australian soprano Lorina Gore has been a principal artist with Opera Australia since 2008. Her roles have included Violetta (La Traviata), Yum-Yum (The Mikado), and Woglinde (Der Ring des Nibelungen), and Pip (Moby-Dick) for the State Opera of South Australia, for which she received a Helpmann Award nomination. Lorina received a Helpmann Award and a Green Room Award in 2017 for her role as Roxana in Opera Australia’s King Roger and subsequently won a second Helpmann Award for her performance in Brett Dean’s Hamlet as Ophelia at the Adelaide Festival in 2018, a performance for which she received high critical praise.

Kristian Winther
As an acclaimed violinist Kristian has also been active as violist conductor and composer. He has performed as soloist with most major Australian and New Zealand orchestras, and has appeared at festivals and concert series throughout Europe, the USA and Canada.

        Participation in tours

        Most of our tours require a MODERATE level of fitness. However, in certain destinations, or in certain seasons, or because of the nature of travel, certain tours will require an ABOVE MODERATE or CHALLENGING level of fitness. For the overall benefit of the group, at the time of booking we will require you to declare in writing that you are fit to participate in your chosen tour according to the level of fitness required for that tour. If you (or we) have any doubts about your level of fitness, you may be required to undergo a doctor’s appraisal. This would require your doctor to read the itinerary of your chosen tour, including the fitness level, and provide you (and us) with a written confirmation of your ability to participate.
        We reserve the right to refuse admission to the tour for any reason before commencement of the tour. Further, if after the tour has begun it becomes apparent that you are unfit or unsuitable to travel on the tour, we reserve the right to require you to withdraw from the tour at the earliest opportunity to do so. No refund will be provided.
        It is also a requirement that you do not cause any significant disruption to the tour or the tour group, and we may refuse admission on the tour, or require you to withdraw from the tour at any time if your participation causes significant disruption for other guests or the tour group or there is any safety issue as a result of your ongoing participation in the tour.

        Fitness to participate

        Moderate

        Tour members must be able to:

        • negotiate airports and railway stations without wheelchair assistance
        • use combined shower/bath facilities (it is impossible to guarantee walk-in shower facilities)
        • undertake walking tours of 1-2 hours duration, including using stairs, walking over cobblestones and other uneven surfaces
        • stand for long periods in museums and other sites
        • embark / disembark coaches, trains and other methods of transportation without assistance
        • handle your own luggage

        Above Moderate

        In addition to the above, tour members must also be able to:

        • undertake walking tours of 2-3 hours
        • climb staircases of 100 or more steps

        Challenging*

        In addition to the above, tour members must also be able to:

        • handle extremes of temperature (e.g. below 0 or above 35 degrees)
        • handle extremes of altitudes (e.g. 4000 metres and above)
