Wagner’s Parsifal in Melbourne

Join classical music broadcaster and musicologist Phillip Sametz for an impressive fully-staged production of Richard Wagner’s operatic masterpiece Parsifal by the Victorian Opera at Melbourne’s glorious Palais Theatre.

Conducted by Richard Mills AM, and directed by Roger Hodgman, this bold production features some of the world’s most acclaimed Wagnerian singers, including Burkhard Fritz as Parsifal, Katarina Dalayman as Kundry and internationally revered Melbourne baritone Derek Welton as Klingsor, who sang the role at the Bayreuth Festival in 2017.

Cap off your weekend in Melbourne with a private recital in the historic suburban Melbourne villa of Astolat, featuring a program of late-Romantic arias and Lieder by singers of the Melba Opera Trust.

Arrive in Melbourne and make your way to the hotel for check-in available from 14:00. Tour arrangements commence at 17:00 with a transfer to the historic 1880s Melbourne villa Astolat in the suburb of Camberwell for a welcome drinks reception.

Then, as an appetiser to tomorrow’s Wagnerian feast, enjoy a private recital of late-Romantic arias and Lieder by singers of the Melba Opera Trust, specially arranged for our tour.

In the late morning, enjoy a pre-performance talk by Phillip, followed by an early lunch.

Then, travel to the historic Palais Theatre in St Kilda to take up the best seats in the house for the stunning fully-staged production of Parsifal by the Victorian Opera. Set against the background of the Arthurian legend of the Holy Grail, Parsifal is Wagner’s emotional masterpiece, and explores themes of religion, purity and heroism.

At the interval, walk the short distance to a nearby restaurant to enjoy a private supper served in an intimate setting. Return to the Palais Theatre for the resumption of the performance.
