Art of the Côte d’Azur

Designed as a pre-tour to Art, Music and Wine in the South of France

This tour is part of the World Art Tours program organised by the Art Gallery Society of NSW in partnership with Renaissance Tours.

Depart Australia or New Zealand on suggested Qatar Airways flights via Doha to Nice. Renaissance Tours or your travel agent can assist you with your flights and other travel arrangements.

Arrive in Nice and make your way to the hotel for check-in.

At 18:00 join Wendy, Bernard and fellow travellers for a welcome briefing followed by a special welcome dinner.

Following a morning talk by Wendy and Bernard, transfer to the hilly Cimiez area and visit the Marc Chagall Museum. The museum was created with the cooperation of the artist himself who decided the exact placement of his works and designed the stained glass for the concert hall and other areas. The museum contains a large and diverse collection of religious and secular paintings, drawings, opaque watercolours and pastels.

After lunch, visit the nearby Matisse Museum. Henri Matisse lived on the Côte d’Azur for almost 40 years and was deeply devoted to the region. The coloured landscapes set a flamboyant imprint on his work. Discover various works made by the ‘Master of Colour’ throughout his career. Before leaving the area, continue to the Régina residence where Matisse used to live, and visit the cemetery where Matisse is buried.

In the afternoon, enjoy a walking tour in the old town of Nice following Matisse’s footsteps, from Cours Saleya to Palais de la Méditerranée (where Matisse held his first major exhibition in Nice).

Return to the hotel in the late afternoon. The evening is at leisure.

Following a talk by Wendy and Bernard, depart for the lovely town of Vence, where Matisse lived during World War II. Visit the Rosary Chapel, designed and decorated entirely by Matisse. The white chapel with characteristic blue-and-white-tiled roof hosts stained-glass windows that cast a kaleidoscope of bold colours onto the marble floors.

After lunch in Vence, visit the Musée de Vence Fondation Emile Hugues hosting a permanent collection of Matisse and interesting modern and contemporary art works. Then, enjoy some time at leisure to wander through the little streets of Vence.

Continue to the village of Saint-Paul-de-Vence, perched on a hilltop, and visit the Fondation Maeght. This private foundation presents one of the most extensive 20th century art collections in Europe including many important paintings and sculptures by Chagall, Miró, Léger and various contemporary artists.

Return to Nice in the late afternoon and the rest of the evening is at leisure.

This morning, depart Nice and travel along the French Riviera to Cagnes sur Mer to visit the Renoir Museum. Explore this lovely estate surrounded by olive and citrus trees where Renoir lived at the end of his life.

Continue to the old town of Antibes to visit the Picasso Museum, located in the Château Grimaldi where Picasso lived and had his studio. Picasso gave important works to the city; the small museum presents more than 250 artworks by Picasso and other modern artists.

Enjoy free time for lunch or to amble around Antibes, and then travel to Aix-en-Provence, arriving in the late afternoon, where tour arrangements begin for our Art, Music and Wine in the South of France tour and cruise.
