For those tour members on the Rhine Art and Music Cruise, arrive in Basel in the morning and disembark the MS Amadeus Silver III after breakfast.
Visit the Fondation Beyeler, housed in a superb Renzo Piano-designed purpose-built museum. The foundation houses the vast collection of successful art dealers Hildy and Ernst Beyeler, one of the founders of Art Basel.
In the afternoon, explore the Tinguely Museum, housing the greatest collection of works by Jean Tinguely, one of the most innovative and important Swiss artists of the 20th century. Continue to the Basel Historical Museum, considered the most important cultural and historical museum in the Upper Rhine region. The main part of the museum is located in the Barfüsserkirche, a convent church from the 14th century.
Check in to the hotel in the late afternoon followed by dinner in a local restaurant.
Following a morning talk by Thomas, enjoy a tour of the city, including the large market square with its richly decorated red sandstone town hall and the late Romanesque-Gothic cathedral.
After some free time for lunch, visit the extensive Kunstmuseum. Reopened in 2016 after extensive renovations and the addition of a new wing, the museum displays the largest and most significant public art collection in Switzerland, including works from the early 15th century to the present. The Kunstmuseum is also a major venue for world-class exhibitions and houses the prestigious Art Basel fair.
This morning, depart Basel and head to Zurich. En route, view the expressive architecture of the Goetheanum, headquarters of the School of Spiritual Science and the General Anthroposophical Society.
Upon arrival in Zurich, explore the Kunsthaus, Zurich’s renowned Museum for Modern Art, which displays a large collection of modern art and works by Alberto Giacometti, Picasso, Monet and Chagall as well as numerous contemporary Swiss artists.
Depending on exhibitions on at the time, continue your exploration of Zurich this afternoon by visiting another major museum such as the Kunsthalle, the contemporary art exhibition centre, or the Swiss National Museum, with its very rich section of gothic art, chivalry and liturgical works.
After a talk by Thomas, travel out of Zurich to nearby Winterthur. Visit the Stadtgarten Museum, which houses Oskar Reinhart’s outstanding collection of German, Austrian and Swiss art.
Continue to Reinhart’s Villa ‘Am Römerholz’, which houses his extraordinary collection of European art, from the Middle Ages to the Impressionists. Enjoy some time at leisure in the idyllic park surrounding the villa before returning to Zurich in the late afternoon.
Tonight, celebrate the conclusion of the tour with a special farewell dinner with Thomas and fellow travellers.
