Tour to Tolstoy’s estate

Designed as a post-tour for St Petersburg to Moscow on the Volga Dream.

Travel deep into the countryside to the elegant country estate of Leo Tolstoy, where the master of Russian literature wrote Anna Karenina and War and Peace.

Tolstoy deliberately chose to live on his family estate ‘Yasnaya Polyana’ near Tula for most of his life, believing that a lifestyle of intellectual and physical labour best cultivated an authentically Russian literary aesthetic.

Visit Yasnaya Polyana and explore the house and estate. Visit also the home of Vasily Polenov, one of the great Russian landscape painters of the 19th century. Explore the regional city of Tula, which played an essential role in Emperor Peter the Great’s reforms of the Russian state by outfitting his professionalised army.

In the morning, transfer by coach from Moscow to Tula.

En route, visit the Polenovo Estate Museum, the rural estate of 19th century Russian landscape painter Vasily Polenov. A member of the Peredvizhniki (‘Wanderers’) movement of realist landscape painters, Polenov had a deep affection for the Russian countryside. In 1891 he acquired the present property located in Tula Oblast and then designed and built the house himself.

The interiors of Polenov’s genteel three-storey house have been preserved essentially intact, and contain a significant collection of the family’s personal effects, as well as paintings by Polenov and other Peredvizhniki.

After lunch, continue to the town of Tula and check in to the hotel. Dinner is at a traditional Russian restaurant.

This morning, visit Yasnaya Polyana (‘Bright Glade’), the country estate of Leo Tolstoy.

Tolstoy was born at Yasnaya Polyana in 1828, which at the time extended to an estate of some 1,600 hectares and had 350 serfs working the fields, in a house built by his father and grandfather. The estate shrank a little when Tolstoy had to sell off parts to satisfy gambling debts, and the serfs were liberated in 1861, but the writer lived there for much of his life, following a strict regimen of physical exercise, intellectual labour, manual craftsmanship and socialising with friends. Tolstoy penned both Anna Karenina and War and Peace while living at Yasnaya Polyana.

In the afternoon, visit the Armoury Museum and the 16th century kremlin in Tula, recently restored by the efforts of a charitable foundation.

In the late morning, check out of the hotel and visit Gorki Leninskiye Estate. The estate occupies a fascinating place in Russian history: the abode of various 18th and 19th century noble families, the main house was remodelled in the Neoclassical Style in the early 20th century, before being nationalised by the new Soviet government in 1918 and established as Vladimir Lenin’s dacha (country house). The estate museum now preserves many of the personal possessions of Lenin, who spent the final months of his life here.
