Itinerary

Arrive on suggested flights in Delhi and transfer to your hotel (transfer from the airport to the hotel included in the tour price). Renaissance Tours or your travel agent can assist with your flights and other travel arrangements, including travel insurance (a condition of travel), pre- or post-tour accommodation, and a room category upgrade.

Delhi is an ancient capital city shaped by the Mahabharata, the Mughal Empire and British colonial rule. It has risen and fallen across multiple dynastic sites, leaving behind a rich collection of historic ruins, forts and tombs.

In the morning, join your tour leader Ute Junker and fellow travellers for a welcome briefing at the hotel before an orientation tour of Old Delhi. Founded as Shahjahabanad by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the 17th century, the historic walled city preserves an intricate network of lanes, bazaars and grand mosques.

After lunch, continue to Gurudwara Bangla Sahib for a private, guided tour of Delhi’s revered Sikh shrine. Distinguished by its white marble façades, golden domes and sacred pool, or sarovar, the temple commemorates Guru Har Krishan, who cared for victims of epidemics at this site.

Return to the hotel in the late afternoon for the evening at leisure.

(BL)

Today, visit Amrit Udyan, the celebrated gardens of the Presidential Estate at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Open to the public for only a limited period each year, the gardens combine Mughal-inspired geometry, terraces and water channels with English-style lawns and flower beds.

Continue to Lodhi Garden, where tombs and mosques dating from the Sayyid and Lodhi dynasties rise among mature trees, lawns and winding paths. Developed around these 15th- and 16th-century funerary monuments, the grounds were redesigned as a public garden during the British colonial period.

After some free time for lunch, visit Sunder Nursery, a heritage garden where restored Mughal-era monuments are integrated with formal gardens, lakes and landscapes representing Delhi’s native ecosystem. Walk to nearby Humayun’s Tomb, an influential 16th-century Mughal garden-tomb set within a formal four-part garden, or charbagh, divided by pathways and water channels.

Return to the hotel for some time at leisure before dinner at a nearby restaurant.

(BD)

After breakfast, check out of the hotel and travel by coach to Agra.

Capital of the Mughal Empire during the 16th and 17th centuries, Agra developed into a major centre of art, learning and commerce. The remarkable architectural legacy of the city includes the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort.

Arrive in the late afternoon and check in to the hotel, before enjoying dinner.

(BD)

Early this morning, take a private, guided tour of the Taj Mahal and surrounding gardens. Commissioned by the Mughal emperor Sah Jahan as a mausoleum for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, the celebrated white-marble monument stands at the northern end of a charbagh.

Return to the hotel for some free time before lunch at a local restaurant. In the afternoon, explore Agra Fort, the vast red-sandstone citadel developed by successive Mughal emperors. Its palaces and audience halls overlook the Yamuna River, as well as Anguri Bagh, the formal Mughal garden.

Conclude the day with a visit to a local private garden, before returning to the hotel for an evening at leisure.

(BL)

This morning, depart Agra and travel to Fatehpur Sikri for a private, guided tour. Established by the Mughal emperor Akbar in the late 16th century, this former imperial capital was the first planned city of the Mughal Empire. The red-sandstone palaces, courtyards, pavilions and religious buildings reflect Akbar’s architectural visions and the diversity of his court.

Continue to Jaipur, arriving in the mid-afternoon. Check in to the hotel and enjoy some time at leisure before a talk by Ute, followed by dinner at the hotel’s restaurant.

(BD)

Start the day with a private, guided tour of Amer Fort, a hilltop complex developed by successive Rajput rulers and combining Rajput and Mughal traditions. Explore the monumental gateways, courtyards and richly decorated interiors. Afterwards, continue to nearby Panna Meena ka Kund, a historic stepwell distinguished by its symmetrical arrangement of intersecting stairways.

After lunch, visit Kanak Vrindavan Garden, an 18th-century garden in the Kanak Valley. Associated with Krishna, the complex incorporates formal parterres, fountains and water channels around the Govind Devji Temple.

Enjoy the remainder of the afternoon and evening at leisure.

(BL)

This morning, visit Jawahar Circle Garden, one of Jaipur’s largest public parks, and see Patrika Gate, an elaborately decorated entrance whose painted interiors draw upon the architecture, landscapes and cultural traditions of Rajasthan.

In the evening, transfer to the Narain Niwas Palace, an early 20th century heritage property and now a hotel, set within ten acres of garden, and stroll through its expansive lawn, shaded by mature mango trees.

Enjoy dinner before returning to the hotel.

(BD)

After breakfast, check out of the hotel and visit Sisodia Rani Garden, an 18th-century royal retreat created by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II for his queen. Arranged over a series of terraced levels, the garden incorporates fountains, water channels and painted pavilions. Then, continue to Jaipur’s City Palace for a private, guided tour of the courtyards, gateways and museums of the former royal residence.

In the afternoon, transfer to Jaipur Airport and fly to Udaipur (flight included in tour price). On arrival, continue to the hotel and check in before a late supper at the hotel’s restaurant.

(BD)

Today, explore Udaipur’s City Palace, an extensive complex of palaces, courtyards and gardens overlooking Lake Pichola. Visit Badi Mahal, a garden palace constructed around a natural rocky outcrop at one of the highest points in the complex. Continue on foot to Jagdish Temple, a richly carved 17th-century Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu.

In the afternoon, enjoy a private, guided tour of Saheliyon-ki-Bari, one of Udaipur’s best-known historic gardens. Created in the 18th-century for the women of the royal household, the garden features marble pavilions, lotus pools, elephant-shaped fountains and shaded lawns.

(BL)

This morning, enjoy a private, guided tour of Gulab Bagh, Udaipur’s historic rose garden and one of the city’s largest green spaces, established in the 19th century by Maharana Sajjan Singh. This extensive garden is characterised by broad avenues of mature trees and diverse planting.

Return to the hotel for the remainder of the day at leisure.

In the late afternoon, visit Surajpole Bazaar, dotted with lively shops selling textiles and handicrafts.

(B)

This morning, transfer to Fatch Sagar Lake and travel by boat to Nehru Garden. Named after India’s first prime minister, this oval island garden features colourful flower beds and pyramid-shaped fountains inspired by the gardens in Mysore in southern India.

Return to the hotel and enjoy the afternoon at leisure to relax or to explore the city at your own pace.

Tonight, celebrate the conclusion of the tour with a special farewell dinner with Ute and fellow travellers at a local restaurant.

(BD)

Tour arrangements conclude with a private transfer to Udaipur Airport for suggested flights to Australia. Renaissance Tours or your travel agent can assist you with your flights and other travel arrangements, including additional nights’ accommodation either before or after the tour and travel insurance (a condition of travel).
