Food and Wines of the Margaret River

Join ‘The Wine Man’ Peter Bourne to explore one of the most geographically isolated wine regions in the world and enjoy the delights of this epicurean playground.

The Margaret River region pairs world-renowned wine country and high-end dining with a rugged windswept coastline, whilst retaining the inherent charm of an Australian country town. The Mediterranean climate of bright sunny days and cool nights combined with forward-thinking Australian winemakers have produced internationally acclaimed vintages in recent years.

Appreciate the Margaret River’s bold yet elegant cabernets and stylish, subtle chardonnays that exemplify the terroir of the region. Together with Western Australia’s renowned cobalt-blue marron and the freshest seasonal and local produce, discover the best this corner of Australia has to offer.

Meet Peter and fellow travellers at the Duxton Hotel Perth, 1 St George’s Terrace, Perth at 10:00.

Travel south to Busselton Jetty, the Southern Hemisphere’s longest wood-piled jetty, and enjoy time at leisure for lunch and to wander along the jetty.

Continue to Pierro winery in Willyabrup. Renowned for its stylish white wines, Pierro’s speciality is its Chardonnay – the innovative vine planting and canopy management techniques produce an impressive white with a generous, yet subtle, flavour.

Transfer to Yallingup and check in to the hotel. This evening enjoy a special welcome dinner at Lamont’s Smiths Beach restaurant led by Kate Lamont, one of Western Australia’s most successful chefs.

Travel to Leeuwin Estate, a boutique family-owned winery with an international reputation for producing outstanding wines. Enjoy a tasting featuring the award-winning Art Series Chardonnay.

Continue to Voyager Estate for lunch and wine tasting in this Cape Dutch-style winery. Surrounded on three sides by the Indian Ocean, Voyager Estate has developed a reputation for producing elegant Bordeaux varieties.

Today’s final tasting is at Cape Mentelle Vineyards, a pioneering winery in a pristine coastal location with over 40 years of viticulture history. Sample the outstandingly fresh and fruity purity of the estate’s vibrant white wine varieties.

Enjoy Western Australian oysters accompanied by local sparkling wine in the Margaret River township before returning to the hotel.

Begin today’s tastings at Fraser Gallop Estate, 165 acres of undulating hills perched at the highest point of the Wilyabrup sub-region. All vines on the estate are dry-grown, cane-pruned and hand-picked, allowing the cooling ocean breezes and gravel-loam soil to be fully expressed in the distinctive terroir of their award-winning wines.

Continue to Vasse Felix, Margaret River’s founding wine estate. Enjoy lunch at the estate’s critically acclaimed restaurant, whose ever-changing menu is curated to reflect local, seasonal produce, before a tasting of their iconic wines and a visit to the on-site art gallery.

Return to the hotel in the late afternoon and enjoy the evening at leisure.

Today, start with a tasting at Moss Wood Winery, one of the oldest estates in the region. Established in 1969 as a high-quality, specialist winery, Moss Wood is at the cutting edge of current research and their viticulture techniques are constantly reassessed against world-class trellising, soil conservation and pruning practices. Sample their range of classic Margaret River varieties.

Enjoy lunch at Cullen Wines. Renowned for its biodynamic approach to agriculture, Cullen Estate operates on a philosophy of farming which seeks to recognise the link between plant growth and the rhythms of the cosmos. Cullen Wines specialises in completely natural wines.

This evening, enjoy a dinner that showcases the best of local produce and seafood.
