The Paris Ring

Travel to the city of lights for what promises to be one of 2020’s seminal new productions of the Ring.

Directed by Calixto Bieito, known for his unique interpretation of classic opera, the Paris National Opera production at Opéra Bastille will bring together an exceptional cast, with Iain Paterson as Wotan, and Martina Serafin as Brünnhilde and Jonas Kaufmann as Siegmund. The cast will be complemented by the Paris Opera Orchestra and Chorus under the baton of Philippe Jordan.

Arrive in Paris in the early afternoon on suggested flights and make your way to the hotel.

In the evening, attend a welcome briefing and dinner at the hotel with your tour leader Antony Ernst and fellow travellers.


In the morning enjoy a talk by Antony, followed by a private tour of Sainte-Chapelle. A royal chapel within the medieval Palais de la Cité, it is considered one of highest achievements of the Rayonnant period of Gothic architecture. Although damaged during the French Revolution, the chapel has one of the largest collections of thirteenth century stained glass collections anywhere in the world.

After lunch, return to the hotel for an afternoon at leisure, before transferring to Opéra Bastille for the performance of Das Rheingold commencing at 7:30pm. After the performance, enjoy a sumptuous three-course meal at Opéra Bastille.

This morning enjoy a tour of Opéra Bastille, the primary home of the Paris National Opera.  The building of the Opera House was part of President François Mitterrand’s “Grands Travaux”, and was inaugurated in 1989 on the 200th anniversary of the Storming of the Bastille at the beginning of the French Revolution.

Enjoy an exclusive peek behind the scenes with a private backstage tour. There will also be an opportunity to view the métiers d’art, the workshops charged with sewing, wig making and painting for the production.

In the early evening return to Opéra Bastille for the performance of Die Walkűre commencing at 6:30pm. During the interval, dinner will be served at Opéra Bastille’s restaurant, which boasts a panoramic view of Paris.

Today, travel to the south-east of Paris to the Île-de-France region to admire the Chateau Vaux le Vicomte. The chateau was built between 1658 and 1661 for Nicholas Fouquet, Viscount of Melun and Vaux and superintendent of finance of Louis XIV. The collaboration of the architect, landscape architect and painter decorator marked the beginning of the Louis XIV style.

Explore the chateau with a private guided tour of Nicolas Fouquet’s private apartments on the first floor, followed by the ceremonial salons on the ground floor and the staff rooms and kitchen in the basements.

Enjoy lunch at the estate before returning to Paris in the mid-afternoon. The evening is at leisure.


This morning enjoy a talk by Antony, followed by the remainder of the day at leisure in Paris. Spend time exploring the city’s fascinating museums, dining on French cuisine, shopping at the many markets and designer stores, or just relaxing.

In the late afternoon transfer to Opéra Bastille for the performance of Siegfried commencing at 6pm. A three-course dinner will be served at Opéra Bastille during the intervals.
