The Salzburg Easter Festival marks a significant return in 2026 of the Berlin Philharmonic to Salzburg, re-establishing a tradition initiated by Herbert von Karajan in 1967. Over seven days, witness some of the world’s renowned conductors, including Kirill Petrenko, Daniel Harding and Tugan Sokhiev, lead performances such as Haydn’s The Creation, Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique, Mahler’s monumental Symphony of a Thousand and a new production of Wagner’s Das Rheingold.

To complement the festival, spend four nights in Munich for opera performances at the Bavarian State Opera. Experience Wagner’s Parsifal with renowned American heldentenor Clay Hilley in the lead role, Puccini’s Tosca and Verdi’s Macbeth, portrayed by emerging Mongolian baritone Amartuvshin Enkhbat.

Itinerary

Arrive in Salzburg on suggested flights and make your way to the hotel. At 18:00, join your tour leader Phillip Sametz and fellow travellers for a welcome briefing and talk at the hotel, followed by dinner.

After a talk by Phillip in the morning, join a private, guided walking tour of Salzburg’s old town. Discover the history of eminent buildings such as the Holy Trinity Church, St. Peter’s Abbey and Mirabell Palace, a prime example of baroque architecture and opulence. Its Marble Hall features elaborate stucco work and frescoed ceilings and was a venue where Mozart himself performed.

Continue with a visit to a family-run business that has been handcrafting high-quality umbrellas for over a century. Admire the traditional craftsmanship and learn about the production process both past and present.

This evening, enjoy a performance by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Daniel Harding at the Grosses Festspielhaus.

In the late-afternoon, walk to a local restaurant for an early dinner before a performance by the Berlin Philharmonic under the baton of Tugan Sokhiev at the Grosses Festspielhaus.

After a morning at leisure, walk to the Mozarteum University for a guided tour. The university, one of the largest arts universities in Europe, was established in 1841 in honour of Salzburg-born Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and specialises in music and dramatic arts with over 2,000 students attending from all over the world.

After the tour, walk to the elegant Great Hall in the Mozarteum to hear a chamber music concert by a string sextet from the Berlin Philharmonic, performing works by Mozart and Salieri.

Afterwards, walk to a local restaurant for dinner before returning to the hotel.

Today, explore Schloss Leopoldskron, a Rococo palace established in 1736 and once the home of Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg Leopold Anton von Firmian. Surrounded by 17 acres of manicured grounds, the palace sits by a lake with panoramic views of the mountains.

Afterwards, enjoy lunch at a nearby restaurant before returning to the hotel.

This morning, after a talk by Phillip, enjoy a private tour of the Autograph Vault, located in the basement of the Mozart Residence, exhibiting more than half of all known documents associated with Mozart’s family, including around 200 of Mozart’s original letters. Afterwards, continue with a tour of the Residence, where Mozart lived until 1780 and composed many of his masterpieces.

Tonight, enjoy a new production of Wagner’s Das Rheingold at the Felsenreitschule, performed by the Berlin Philharmonic under the baton of Kirill Petrenko, joined by baritones Christian Gerhaher as Wotan and Leigh Melrose as Alberich.

This morning, enjoy a guided tour of the DomQuartier museum complex, which epitomises Salzburg’s glorious Baroque centre including the cathedral arches, residences, Cathedral Square and the Long Gallery.

Following an afternoon at leisure, walk to a local restaurant for dinner before a concert by the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Tugan Sokhiev at the Grosses Festspielhaus.

This morning, depart Salzburg and travel to Munich, stopping at the lakeside town of Prien am Chiemsee for lunch. Located on the western shore of Lake Chiemsee, the town is known for its traditional Upper Bavarian architecture and frescoes adorning houses and shopfronts.

Arrive in the vibrant city of Munich in the afternoon and check in to the hotel.

In the afternoon, enjoy a talk by Phillip on the coming days’ performances.

Afterwards, walk to the historic National Theatre, home to both the Bavarian State Opera and the Bavarian State Ballet. Opened in 1818, the theatre is renowned for its Neoclassical architecture, opulent interiors and one of the largest opera stages in the world. Attend a performance of Wagner’s Parsifal with the Bavarian State Orchestra conducted by Sebastian Weigle, and tenor Clay Hilley as Parsifal and soprano Nina Stemme as Kundry.

This morning, take a private, guided tour of the Kunsthalle Art Museum. Designed by renowned Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, the museum hosts exhibitions on a wide range of art forms including painting, photography, sculpture, design and fashion.

After some free time at the museum, return to the hotel for an afternoon at leisure.

In the evening, walk to the National Theatre for a performance of Puccini’s Tosca, under the baton of Marco Armiliato. The production features soprano Ailyn Perez and French baritone Ludovic Tézier in the roles of Floria Tosca and Cavaradossi respectively.

In the early evening, walk to a local restaurant for a special farewell dinner with Phillip and fellow travellers.

Afterwards, see the Bavarian State Opera with conductor Andrea Battistoni perform Verdi’s Macbeth, and featuring Mongolian baritone Enkhbatyn Amartüvshin in the title role along with Italian bass Roberto Tagliavini as Banco and Spanish soprano Saioa Hernández as Lady Macbeth.
