John McDonald is Australia’s leading art critic. He wrote a weekly art column for the Sydney Morning Herald for decades, and spent 13 years as film critic for the Australian Financial Review, while contributing to a wide range of publications in Australia and internationally. Nowadays, his work may be found on the website Everything the artworld doesn’t want you to know.

A former Head of Australian Art at the National Gallery of Australia, he has acted as curator for major exhibitions and lectured widely on art and film. He is the author of several books, including The Art of Australia: Exploration to Federation and Studio: Australian Artists on the Nature of Creativity.
